On 2nd March, 2021, the results of the Punjab elections were announced. The candidates of the incumbent Indian National Congress (INC) won a major victory in the polls, securing a decisive 82 seats out of 117. The result marked the second consecutive victory of the INC in the state.
The INC’s opponent in this race, the Shiromani Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party (SAD-BJP) alliance, managed to secure only 30 seats. Aam Aadmi Party ( AAP), which forayed in Punjab for the first time, managed to win 20 seats. Another new entrant, the Shiromani Akali Dal ( Prabhuhar), was able to secure 3 seats in the state Assembly.
The 2016 Punjab Assembly elections were a test for the INC and the AAP, seeing as these parties were challenging the ruling SAD-BJP alliance which had been in power for ten continuous years. However, the decisive victory of the INC, reiterated the faith and trust of the people in the party.
The INC has attributed its victory to the hard work and dedication put forth by party volunteers in the state, who worked to connect with people, despite all the difficulties caused by COVID-19.
The Chief Minister of Punjab and INC leader, Captain Amarinder Singh, hailed the significant victory as a “triumph of the people”. The Chief Minister is expected to be sworn in shortly.
The result of the Punjab Assembly Elections is a testament to the staunch support the Congress party continues to receive from the people in the state and the INC is looking forward to fulfilling the responsibilities entrusted on them.
