Today marks the end of the much anticipated Kolkata Photo Fort (KPF) – a three-day festival celebrating the rich photography culture of Kolkata, India. The photo exhibition, which began on Friday and concluded today, featured an array of captivating images from a variety of professional and amateur photographers.
The competition saw a remarkable turnout from the local photography community. Over 400 applicants from all over the Indian subcontinent applied, the majority hailing from Kolkata itself. Each submitted photo was scrutinised by a panel of expert judges and assessed for its originality, story, composition and relevance to the theme of the festival.
The winners of the festival were announced today at a gala event held at Taj Bengal, Kolkata. After much deliberation, the panel of judges unanimously declared the following as the best photos featured in the festival:
1st Place: Kunal Samant’s picture of a woman harvesting jute in rural Bengal
2nd Place: Subhajeet Biswa’s picture of a woman picking tea leaves in an Assam tea garden
3rd Place: Aniruddha Guha’s picture of a boy playing cricket in a Kolkata school
In addition to the aforementioned, several honorable mentions were also announced, including Neel Kamal’s black-and-white cityscape of Kolkata, Jisshu Rakshit’s monochrome photograph of a Bengal tiger, and Somesh Saha’s candid portrait of a group of boys playing marbles in a park.
The Kolkata Photo Fort was hosted by Ranjan Varma & Dasee Foundation and sponsored by Canon, who provided prizes and equipment for the participants. The festival created a platform for photographers from all backgrounds to showcase their talent, and made photography accessible to the general public.
All in all, the festival was a resounding success. KPF showed that Kolkata is home to some of the best photographers in the country, as well as provided a unique opportunity for tourists to view and appreciate its wide range of culture and heritage.
