The general election in India was concluded with the Election Commission of India announcing the result on Thursday 23rd May 2019. The Lok Sabha election saw the ruling BJP-led NDA coming back to power for a second consecutive term with a massive majority of 353 seats. This is a huge increase from their 2014 performance of 282 seats in the Lok Sabha.
The BJP managed to significantly perform better in states that traditionally have been strongholds for other parties. This feat was achieved due to the combination of the BJP’s image of being a development-oriented party and its large cadre of workers who worked hard to make the party win.
With this result, the BJP has created history by becoming the first non-Congress party to come back to power in India with a majority. Let us look at the seat tally in some of the important states in the country.
In Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party-Bahujan Samaj Party (SP-BSP) alliance was decimated by the BJP, which won 62 out of the 80 constituencies in the state. In Maharashtra, the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance won an impressive 43 out of 48 constituencies.
The NDA also fared very well in the states of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, where it won 24 and 21 constituencies respectively. Further, the BJP-Janata Dal (U) alliance won 17 out of the 40 seats in Bihar.
In the south, the BJP alliance won in Bihar, with the party managing to win 25 out of 28 constituencies in the state. The BJP also won 12 out of the 25 Lok Sabha seats in Karnataka and recorded a landslide victory in Gujarat, where it won 26 out of the state’s 26 constituencies.
The election result is a clear indicator that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity has soared among the majority of the population in India. He has promised to focus on creating jobs, reducing poverty, and improving the overall economic situation in the country, and the election result makes it evident that people expect those promises to be fulfilled.
The Lok Sabha election has given a clear mandate to the BJP-led NDA, and it remains to be seen how this government fulfils its public mandate.
